Birdlife

A story about a girl who turns into a bird!

The story so far…

As a young girl experiencing emigration at a tender age and growing up in a mixed Māori/Pakeha family, Hines’ search for identity and belonging leads her to find her solace in the birds that are fed on the roof of the house by her beloved Granddad. She soon discovers her allies in a stately Morepork, two cheeky Fantails and a friendly Wandering Albatross. However, it is the formidable Tata Tui who harasses her to wake up to her true nature because he knows ultimately her soul belongs to the Bird Kingdom!

Featuring puppetry, physical theatre, live music and mask, Birdlife is intimate and captivating theatre, made all the more engaging as it tells a tale of migration and longing that speaks to so many people in Aotearoa.

First premiered at The Enchanted Evening Theatre Series at historic Fairfield House, in Nelson, 2014
